Which sheets would you explore first?

Choose your starting points. The workbook keeps all its connected sheets and formulas; this does not remove or rebuild worksheets.

Nothing selected yet.

Check the selected period, grocery estimate and input warnings before shopping.

Set the meal period, review date and your own grocery budget in one currency.

Give each ingredient one ID, a base unit and the price of a complete purchase pack.

Check the conversion factor before using a different unit in a recipe line.

Define a recipe’s base servings, then review its calculated ingredient cost per serving.

Link an ingredient quantity to a recipe and an explicit unit. The selected meals scale that quantity.

Choose a recipe, date, serving count and status for each meal you intend to cook.

Record a usable quantity in its base unit, location and optional expiry. Expiry before period end excludes the lot.

Review demand less usable pantry stock, rounded to whole packs at your entered pack prices.

Read the recipe-to-shopping sequence, input colours, capacities and unit limitations.

Reserve a dated lot for a named planned meal.

Buy the shortfall after valid early-lot reservations.

This separate fictional working copy changes the rice pack size and lot expiry explicitly. Start with the simple servings example above; use this route when you want to reserve an early-expiry lot for a specific meal.

    01 / ACTUAL WORKSHEET DETAIL

    Keep the early lot separate.

In this working copy, P-01 holds 200 g of rice and expires on 11 October. Set Ingredients!D8 to 500 g per pack. The 600 g demand needs two rice packs; with beans, the purchase estimate is EUR 6.00.

Source: Purchase review!I12:K15. Fictional working copy, locally recalculated.

    02 / ACTUAL WORKSHEET DETAIL

Reserve it for the earlier meal.

In Pantry use!A13:E13, enter A-01, P-01, MP-01, 200 and a note. MP-01 is on 10 October, before the lot expires. Check that Input check says OK; reserving does not change the pantry quantity.

Source: Pantry use!B12:D14. Fictional working copy, locally recalculated.

    03 / ACTUAL WORKSHEET DETAIL

    Review the adjusted purchase.

Purchase review counts the 200 g reservation once. The rice shortfall is now 400 g: one 500 g pack. With beans, the whole-pack estimate is EUR 3.60. A 201 g reservation exceeds this lot and blocks the total.

Source: Purchase review!I12:K15. Fictional working copy, locally recalculated.

When using reservations, use Purchase review as your purchase list. Never add its total to Grocery: they are alternative views of the same demand. Check dates, lot suitability and warnings yourself; no stock is consumed automatically.

Eight servings consume EUR 1.44 rice, EUR 2.40 beans and EUR 0.48 oil: total ingredient cost EUR 4.32, or EUR 0.54 per serving. Pantry stock covers all 40 ml oil needed. Only rice and beans need buying, rounded to whole packs for EUR 3.60. Existing pantry ingredients still contribute to recipe cost; they are not a new shopping purchase.

      Calculated

The existing recipe-to-demand calculation feeds Grocery; no additional meal entry or shopping engine is introduced.

      Your next step

Whole-pack purchase estimate changes from EUR 3.60 to EUR 4.80. Review Week view, then restore Meal Plan!E8 to 6 before following the original six-plus-two-serving example below.

    2. 02

      Set up one recipe

      You enter

Give each ingredient a stable text ID, a pack size in g, ml or each and its actual pack price. Link recipe lines using explicit units. Unit factors are visible and editable.

      Calculated

In Recipes, R-01 makes four servings. Recipe Lines uses 300 g rice, 400 g beans and 20 ml oil. The supplied unit factors convert 0.3 kg rice to 300 g.

      Your next step

Open Recipe Lines and follow R-01 into the reviewed quantities. Resolve input checks before shopping.

    3. 03

      Choose meals and servings

      You enter

After restoring Meal Plan!E8 to 6, follow the original example: six servings of MP-01 and two of MP-02. Only Planned meals inside the selected period contribute to Grocery.

      Calculated

Meal Plan requests six and two servings of R-01: 600 g rice, 800 g beans and 40 ml oil in total. Pantry has usable 200 g rice, 400 g beans and 100 ml oil.

      Your next step

Open Pantry and follow R-01 into the reviewed quantities. Resolve input checks before shopping.

    4. 04

      Check stock before shopping

      You enter

Enter usable pantry quantities in each ingredient base unit. Stock expiring before the end of the period is excluded. Grocery rounds the shortfall up to whole purchase packs. Review expiry, availability and prices yourself.

      Calculated

Grocery has a 400 g shortfall for rice and a 400 g shortfall for beans; oil has no shortfall. One 1 kg rice pack at EUR 2.40 plus one 400 g beans pack at EUR 1.20 costs EUR 3.60. Consumed ingredients cost EUR 4.32 (including EUR 0.48 oil already in the pantry); purchase cost and recipe cost answer different questions.

      Your next step

Open Grocery and follow R-01 into the reviewed quantities. Resolve input checks before shopping.

    5. 05

      Review the list

      You enter

Resolve every input warning, then use the Grocery filter to show Needed (keep source row order). Estimated cost is for whole packs, not the fraction used in the meals. Nothing purchases or reserves stock.

    6. 06

Use a dated early lot before buying more

      You enter

In Pantry use, save a valid lot/meal allocation in base units. Keep the selected period and review date current.

      Calculated

Purchase review combines disjoint stock pools. Reservations are capped by the lot and meal ingredient demand. Any filled invalid reservation blocks the new estimate.

      Your next step

Inspect the reviewed packs. Confirm actual food suitability and update pantry quantities yourself after use.

    Questions about this workbook

The details that affect your choice.

Do I need early-lot reservations to plan a basic week?

No. Start with one known recipe, its ingredient quantities and planned servings, then use Grocery. Week view reads the same Meal Plan records. Pantry use and Purchase review are a later optional path for explicit early-expiry reservations; never add the two shopping lists together.

Can I plan to use stock before it expires?

Yes, through explicit Pantry use reservations. A dated Use lot expiring before period end can be linked to a Planned meal within the period, on or after review and no later than expiry. All reservations must fit the lot and meal ingredient need. Purchase review then includes those valid reservations separately from Grocery stock. No automatic consumption or safety assessment; revise quantities and allocations after use.

How do I know what to edit?

Blue cells accept records. Grey cells contain formulas. Start in a disposable fictional example copy with START_HERE.pdf for the current simple task. The same guide also explains the retained setup and optional lot-allocation workflow. Each register has visible input checks.

    Can I add unlimited rows?

No. Capacities are fixed and listed sheet by sheet. Adding rows requires extending formulas, validation and review ranges; it is not a supported automatic expansion.

Does the file send my records anywhere?

No macros or external connections are supplied. Your spreadsheet application and cloud-storage settings are separate.
