Pack a move you can unpack

Give boxes clear identities, separate provider follow-ups and keep first-night essentials easy to find.

Plan for the arrival as well as the packing

A packed box is only part of a completed moving job. Someone still needs to know where it belongs, what is inside and whether it should be opened on the first evening. Start with the date and the practical tasks, then give boxes an identity as you pack rather than trying to reconstruct their contents afterwards.

The Moving Home Planner separates the timeline, packing record, service follow-ups and arrival tasks. It includes plain-paper Box Label Cards and a separate offline companion for linked printouts. You supply the paper and attach the cards yourself; commercial adhesive-sheet alignment is not included. Complete bookings and address changes directly with each provider, then record their confirmation.

Connect preparation to unpacking

  1. Write the moving date on Moving Timeline. Add the next jobs, target dates and responsible people. Use Quotes & Bookings for provider conversations, checking arrangements against their actual confirmations. Keep an enquiry distinct from a booking and avoid assuming a listed date is reserved.
  2. Use Room Packing Plan for one room at a time. Decide which item groups can be packed now and which remain in use. Identify first-night essentials before closing their boxes so they can stay in a clearly marked place you expect to reach on arrival.
  3. Give each box a unique ID on a Box Label Card or your own box marking. Use the same ID in Box Register with its contents, original room, destination room and priority. Specific notes such as desk cables and notebook are more useful than miscellaneous when several boxes look alike.
  4. Keep service follow-ups on Utilities & Services and Address Change Checklist. Record the organisation, the action and the confirmation you need; check its current process directly. Use Moving Cost Planner for your own estimated, actual and paid amounts, updating totals by hand and checking them against records.
  5. Build Moving-Day Plan around the arrangements actually confirmed. Complete First-Night Checklist with essentials and their packed locations. On arrival, use Unpacking & Home Setup to choose a first task and the relevant box IDs, then mark the Box Register when a box is unpacked.

Fictional example: finding the first-night bag

This example is fictional. Priya and Ellis are moving between flats. Box K03 contains mugs and kitchen towels and goes to the new kitchen. A separate first-night bag holds their chosen bedding, toiletries and chargers. Its location is written on First-Night Checklist. A provider enquiry stays unconfirmed on Quotes & Bookings until they receive an actual response. Their first unpacking job refers to K03 rather than every kitchen box.

Common mistakes to catch

Avoid reusing a box ID or writing a contents list after sealing several similar boxes. Do not put first-night essentials beneath items you expect to unpack later. Mark service changes complete only after completing the required action and checking confirmation. Keep private identifiers out of a paper checklist, and avoid treating estimated moving costs as amounts already paid or confirmed quotes.

Reuse the record in the offline companion

For linked printouts, extract the paid ZIP and open MOVING_COMPANION.html in a desktop browser with JavaScript. Record a box once, select its room and mark whether it is needed on the first night. The companion offers five outputs: Box labels, First-night sheet, Moving-day run sheet, Handover record and Room progress. Box records supply labels, first-night records, room progress and current box details in jobs you link. Enter job times, people and handover observations separately. It supports 120 boxes and 48 moving jobs; the PDF Box Register remains a separate template.

Export a JSON backup before closing the companion and import that backup to continue later. There is no automatic storage, cloud sync or update to the PDF forms. A JSON backup can be up to 512 KiB. You can start with the separate free Moving Workspace and import its exported backup into the companion; the free workspace has local drafts and a 256 KiB backup limit. Keep the formats separate and check a printout before relying on it.

Keep this week's jobs visible

Use the free weekly page for the next packing sessions and follow-ups. Print selected pack pages in A4 or US Letter to match your paper, testing one page on your printer. Use the print copies for handwriting or the separate fillable copies for typed entries in a supporting PDF reader. There is no booking system, messaging or automatic box tracking.
